Casual Leather

Hello Lovelies =)

I've been travelling lots within Taiwan in the last two weeks - mostly shopping and eating a lot. Can't wait to show off share with you all the goodies I've accumulated! On another note, I've been (re)discovering the joys of bargaining...even when it's only a few CDN dollars difference...it makes you feel so much more satisfied and rewarded! Maybe that's just how the psychology of consumerism works, but hey I ain't complaining about getting a good deal.

On another note, we've been doing lots of sightseeing. We have witnessed 1 sunrise (at Alishan) and 5 sunsets so far at various locations. I'll share these photos later when I get home to Vancouver, but in the meantime I've been posting in real-time on Instagram.

This set of photos were taken from the first half of my trip. I've wanted a faux-leather jacket for a LONG TIME, but finally set my eyes on these during the Cyber Monday Sale. Since we've been running around literally, I've been dressing pretty casually and mainly for comfort. This jacket is awesome for dressing up any type of outfit....skirt, skinnies, t-shirt, you name it. If you saw my FB update a couple days ago, you would know that I have publicly announced my obsession with leggings and am on a "break" with normal pants.

Not Another Ugly Christmas Sweater

Happy Holidays!

Although I'm missing the festivities at home back in Vancouver, I will be sure to bring out the Christmas spirit wherever I may be.

What better way to celebrate the holidays with a tribute to some not so ugly Christmas sweaters?

A Walk in the Park

Hey Lovelies,

I am loooong due for an update! I have been in the process of reorganizing my place to get ready for some home renovations, so I have been nonstop packing and moving furniture. It's getting me in good shape, but all the holiday goodies are definitely NOT helping. I have downsized to my four-leveled book shelf, so I only have access to a small, yet practical in my opinion, portion of my closet. With the reorganizing in order, I realized the importance of OPTIMIZING what I have. At the face of the endless holiday sales, I definitely need the voice of conscience in the back of my mind, while I make smart purchases that reflect my own style. It's like trying to find your dream job. Sometimes you just want what's hot and what seems good on paper, but after awhile you realized that you jumped in too quickly without figuring out what it was exactly that you wanted. It's about knowing who you are and what you want to represent.

Now, onto the outfit. The good thing about going through your wardrobe once in awhile, is that you not only can pick out items to donate or give away, you also remind yourself of things you used to love or have neglected for a long time. For instance, I came across these suede wedges I bought last winter. Oops! Time to give it some loving. I admit the hat and trench vest makes me look a bit like an explorer (not Dora the Explorer though, totally different thing), but I quite like the cut and the colour of the dress.

Thanks to my BF for the great photos. I really think that his photography skills are improving. It's common for style bloggers to have photographer/videographer boyfriends, so hey for once I may actually have a positive influence on him!

Holiday cheers everyone. Have fun getting ready for Christmas!

Vintage Love

Last weekend we attended my BF's grandparents' 60th anniversary. 60TH!!!! Many couples celebrate their one year anniversary, five years or even ten years...but 60th is really something special. At the anniversary party, they shared photos from their trips to over 70 countries around the world. It was clear that their passion for travelling kept them closer than ever over the years. Of course, that's the not only thing, since relationships take serious work, but being able to celebrate their years of togetherness was inspirational!

Inspired: Red on Red

This fall, it's all about the red, all shades of red. It's amazing how this colour has blossomed from a single bright summer hue into a gradient of crimson, burgundy, ruby, oxblood - bolstering with richness and grandeur. The play on texture and shades adds depth to the story of the outfit, as if to say "forget about matching, I'm going to wear whatever the heck I want!" It's edgy. It's classy. It's chic.

Things I Love About Fall

Hello! Happy Autumn! As much as the cold breeze is sending chills down my spine, this week's Random Thursday topic is giving me a chance to appreciate the season, in all its deserving glory. Because really, fall is beautiful and it's REALLY not that bad.

VFW Spring/Summer 2013 Recap

At last! I am ready to share my photos and tidbits from Vancouver Fashion Week. It was an eventful week - 5 days of VFW, the first week of our dodgeball season and the Jason Mraz concert.
This was my first time at Vancouver Fashion Week and I was thoroughly intriqued and impressed by the diversity of collections, designers and audience at both the fashion shows and the galas. True to the event's own mandate, this really was an event that reflected the multiculturalism and uniqueness of Vancouver as a city by bringing together designers from different countries and cultures (South Africa, Korea, Paris, etc.) and an audience consisted of local "celebrities", media VIPs (ie. bloggers and social media stars), professionals and students from the fashion industry and people like me who were merely fashion enthusiasts.

My favorite collections were the ones that surprised the crowd with their amazing creations. I loved details and cut-outs from QUBE. I was blown away by the intensity (water was sprayed on the model's hair before they hit the runway & they were literally speed walking) fashion-forwardness from Ha Sang Beg's show. Having had the opportunity to help out with Gertz's collection backstage, I was impressed by his intricacy with the dresses and his craftsmanship as he manipulated the LED light structures in the dress in preparation for the show. Their dedication and passion showed not only through their creations but also through their interactions with the models, makeup artists and people around them. Like artists, they were committed to showing the world their vision in their own tune, words and style. In all, it was inspiring.

Peplum x 5 Ways

This fall, fashion is bringing peplum back! Peplum is a top that extends into a skirt-like fabric just above the hips. (Did you know that the word peplum meant "tunic" in Greek? Very cool.)

There are many fashion trends that are making a comeback, but to be honest, I have no problem with that (as long as they don't bring back tye-dye or neon spandex shorts...hmmm wait I think that happened already.). I am a fan of consigned and vintage clothing, and I couldn't be more happy to celebrating classic styles of the last century by incorporating it into modern day street fashion.

This striped peplum top is amongst one of my recent (and most satisfying) purchases from Egocloset. Ego Closet provides eccentric and affordable styles unique from your typical chain retail stores. If you want to be ahead of the game and find items that set you apart from the rest of the crowd, this is the place to go. It was my first time purchasing from this store and my package arrived within 2 business days! They have an online boutique as well as a store in Gastown. The fabric of the peplum top is soft which means that the shape was not super exaggerated and is appropriate for casual settings as well as formal occasions. There is also a black bow in the front of the waistline - extra points for cuteness!

Printed Shorts x 6 Ways

Happy Monday!

To kickstart a new week, I've picked a pair of black and white printed shorts to restyle. Whenver we make a purchase decision at a clothing store, I'm sure we're all wondering "will I wear this?", "do I have anything to go with this?" or "how often will I wear it?" Those are all very important questions, and I'm making it a personal mission to restyle the HECK out of as many pieces as possible.

Prints are huge this year - everything from floral patterns, graphic prints, aztec patterns, cute zebras and birds.. you name it! These prints may look busy but play a part in jazzing up an old outfit. Here are the six ways of which I have restyled them.

From left to right:

9 to 5er  - The tailored blazer and flowy white top makes it fun but still suitable for a professional setting.

Boho Beach - Take this off shoulder top and feather earrings for a twirl at the beach.

Preppy Blair - Add a cropped cardigan and a headband to get a sharp, preppy look.

Brights - Just add a bright coloured top and some statement jewlery and you're good to go.

Print on Print - Yes I did! Print on print can work. Here I paired stars with the diamonds on the shorts for some extra bling ;)

Culture Coulture - I really like the colours on this pashmina. Paired with some dangling earrings and a yellow belt, I'm ready to hit the museum or an outdoor concert.

What's your favorite look? Or more importantly, which look would YOU wear?

Have a great one!

Taiwan Fest

Greetings! I just came back from a long weekend work event - exhausted but more inspired and refreshed than ever. I wish I had shared my photos of the Taiwan Fest in downtown vancouver earlier to encourage more people to go. I had so much fun that I went back the next day just for MORE food!

The Taiwan Fest took place over the Labour Day long weekend. Apart from the previous years, the festival took place in the heart of downtown - on Granville Street and behind the Vancouver Art Gallery. The event featured lots of businesses, cultural games and activities (ie. lantern making and chinese vegetable plants), as well as Taiwanese music artists and bands. The highlight however was the amazing variety of traditional food! As a Taiwanese, I would have to say that the dishes were a fairly decent portrayal of the traditional street foods back home. The fried shrimp rolls, braised pigfoot with thin noodles, brown rice cake (really pork blood mixed with rice..), lamb skewers, etc....this was more authentic and diverse than the night market! Needless to say, I would HIGHLY recommend everyone to check it out next year.

Random Thursday: Favorite Feel Good Movie

This week's Random Thursday topic is.....Favorite Feel Good Movies. Sweet. Time to share my secret indulgence in Pixar and my love for Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep.

1. FINDING NEMO

P sherman..sydney. How does that go again? Doesn't matter. The characters in this movie are cute to the max and I'm just a sucker for animated creatures. Dory has so many shining moments in this movie.

Sayin' I Do

This summer has been filled with many beach days, bbq parties, and the most magical of them all, beautiful weddings. I had the chance to attend a charming wedding to celebrate the union of an absolutely adorable couple. The ceremony was held at Mayfair Golf Course in Richmond. Upon entering the building, guests walked through the dining area and towards a grass pennisula in the middle of the spacious golf course. The area seated just under 100 guests, and with the sun shining brightly, it was the perfect moment. Other than the fact that we were at risk of getting nailed by a golfball...it was picture perfect nonetheless.

Since this was an outdoor event, I decided to wear a flowy peach dress that I recently received in a package from my cousins in Taiwan (yay - love my sistas!). Weddings are a happy occasion, so I feel that colours are definitely necessary. This dress can actually be worn two ways - as a V-neck dress or reversed into a boat neck dress (wide neckline). It depends on your body shape, and personally, V-necks are usually more flattering on me. The dress has plaids consisted of soft blue and peach accents running across the bottom, so I decided to decided on a blue necklace to compliment the peach and to bring out the pattern.

Mural Magic

Sometimes we go through phases where we become absolutely obsessed with something. Perhaps it's something you've never paid attention to before. Perhaps it's a reoccuring subject that continuously catches your eye (like leopard print and me = if I see leopard print I get tunnel visioned).

I was looking through my photos from California and found several photos of murals that I took. Most of them are from Venice with the exception of one from Halfmoon Bay near San Francisco. I love these murals so much that I hope to get a mural painted in my future dream home. Yes, one day. It'll happen.

Birthday Suit

TGIF!

It was my birthday this past week, and I just wanted to dedicated a post to all of mywonderful friends, family, coworkers who made this day so special.  I enjoyed the surprises, freshly-baked cupcakes, an authentic doughnut platter, thoughtful presents (everything was so ME! I was so impressed) and the surprise visits.  I booked the upstairs room at one of my favorite restuarants, the Mandalay Bay Steakhouse & Lounge, which overlooks the Steveston pier. There was a moment where I stepped out to the balcony next to the room and glanced into the room through the glass windows, and I took amental photograph of all my dear ones in a room together chatting and having a good time. This is it, I thought, this is the perfect “HAPPINESS” moment.  It is just so incredibly difficult to get people together as people move onto other stages of their lives, so I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to gather all the best people under one roof J The birthday girl/boy usually gets the spotlight on their special day, but as the birthday girl, I feel like it’s also a day to show your appreciation of the people around.
As for the outfit (the o-so-important part of theday), I wanted to veer away from the classic party dress and wear somethingbeachy and bohemian-inspired? The floral pattern, the frills and the high-lowcut are all qualities in clothes that I absolutely adore. To stay away from theblack leggings and shorts which are my go-to’s for colourful long tops, Ithought the denim mini skirt would do the trick especially to contrast the high-low cut of the top. Result? LOVE in the making.

Blank Canvas

 Hello hello!

Last week, I tried GYU-KAKU for the first time. They are a Japanese BBQ Restaurant in downtown and they have an amazing 50% Happy Hour Menu every Monday!

For a lovely meal on the patio on a nice summer day, I decided to put on a colourful summery dress. I paired it up with off-white neutrals. Instead of the safe ballet flats or lady-like strappy sandals, I wanted to jazz it up with some booties. To sum up my inspiration for this outfit is this quote: "Life is a blank canvas, so you need to throw all the paint on it you can."

Rock the Weekend Chic

Vrroom Vroom...

How was your weekend? I can't believe how gorgeous the weather was this weekend. Having spent a week and half in California left me anticipating an uncomfortable period of sunshine-withdrawal... and instead I'm being spoiled. THANK YOU VANCOUVER!

I was blessed with all the good things this week - sunshine, my best friend coming home, anniversary with my man and the best of it all *drumroll* winning a pair of tickets to the Michael Jackson Immortal World Tour by Cirque du Soleil (courtesy of PUR Movement where I've been taking dance classes)! BEAUTY.

This weekend, I sported a Rock and Roll Chic look. With a new top I have acquired during the course of my roadtrip (Desert Ridge Outlet Mall - near Palm Springs. Best outlet ever), my favorite booties and an edgy necklace, I was ready to rock the weekend. I've had these booties forever and they are actually extremely comfy. Nine West make great leather shoes and surprisingly my feet are free from blisters after hours of strutting around the streets of Vancouver. Function AND fashion is possible I tell you!

**CC's Styling Tips:**

1) Make an outfit unique by adding 1-2 elements of surprise. Go for some edgy statement jewelry OR an unconventional piece of clothing.

2) Don't be too concerned about being matchy-matchy. For example, instead of black leggings to match the black shoes, I went with denim leggings with a black stripe on the side. Unconventional.....but trust me it works.

Princess for a day

Wouldn't it be fun to be a princess for a day? (Oh yes Kate...only her.)

On day 6, we stopped by Pismo Beach and Morro Bay, eventually making our way to the main attraction, Hearst Castle in San Simeon. The castle rests upon a tall peak in the mountains, overlooking the oceans. Up top, you have a 360 degrees view of nature, as well as the opportunity to indulge in historical European and Roman architecture and artifacts. At times, I was sure I was in Europe somewhere....but the ketchup and mustard on the fancy dining table and the billiard in the gamesroom brought me back to California! If you are ever in this area, this is definitely a must-see. In a popular article who published an obituary for William Hearst, it said something along the lines of: "Most rich people have money but no fun. William Hearst was one of the few exceptions."

I am finally home in Vancouver and am now slowly going through my photos from this trip. I can't wait to finish sharing the remains of my adventure with you!

Hello Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is a beautiful town filled with Spanish architectural influences. We began our exploration of the town with it's courthouse, inspired by the historic Spanish structures. It's a must-see and is open to the public for free. The tower at the top allows you to view the entire town, even part of the coastline.

Following the tour at the courthouse at the heart of the town, we walked along State Street towards the farmer's market. The fruits all looked so fresh and delicious. Not only were there the usual varieties like tomatoes and strawberries there were also lots of exotic ones like the dragon tea pea and etc. The surrounding brand name stores (like Coach and Macys) on the sides of the street all have vintage inspired signage, setting them apart from their usual commercial counterparts.

After leaving the area, we drove by Solvang, a Danish town. It was almost sunset so most stores were closed, so we just took our time admiring the architecture.

The weather was extremely hot inland in comparison to the coast, so it was a huge sunscreen feat for the both of us. So y'all better slap on those sunscreens ladies! The heat wave is on!

Light up your life

We all need a little something something to light up our lives.

My version of a pick-me-up usually involves treating myself to some froyo, scoring some great deals or wearing a bright color...on a normal day. During this vacation, it's not only shopping at the female version of a candy shop but also watching the beautiful fireworks at Disneyland!!!

This outfit here is a contrast of a neon coral quarter sleeves and my purple shorts - keeping it simple yet fun. In the summer, you just can't go wrong with a fresh pop of color.

What's your favorite pop of color this summer?

Where my beaches at

Two years ago, I fell in love with the beaches in LA. Not only for the blue skies morphing into the blue waves, but also for the great weather and mesmerizing atmosphere.

California is starting to creep up on the list of my favorite places in the world. As I prepared for a day of strolling on the beach, I gave my best shot at the Cali girl style - flowy top, hi-low skirt, sunglasses... topped off with a hat. The only thing I was missing was a nice, even tan :( oh well, that'll come eventually!

We visited two beaches during our day trip in LA - Venice Beach followed by Santa Monica. Ive been to Santa Monica several times but have never gotten sick of the ferris wheel or the pier. As for Venice Beach, it's my first time here and I was completely enchanted by the love of artistic expression and freedom at every street corner - colorful surprises one after the other. I took countless photos and the ones below are merely a few highlights.

Enjoy!

Music is the language of the soul

Hello! I am behind on my postings but I will continue to play catchup as the week goes on.

Day 3 in the desert - I visited the Music Instrument Museum. It was surprisingly enlightening and interesting. They had exhibits which introduced historic instruments from all over the world, as well as an in-depth exploration of modern day music. The building is quite new, with wood finishes and a courtyard outside.

There was a couple of exhibits I found particularly interesting. First was about how pianos were made, from sanding down the wood to tuning by a piano master. The second was an interview conducted with a popular flute maker and musician. He is of Aboriginal descent and was taught how to make flutes by his uncle. In the interview, he talked about how people often asked him if his music is traditional. He often replies that tradition is constant - constantly changing, and that what we start doing now could become a tradition. So whether it is or it's not it doesn't matter. We should always hope that whatever music we make now becomes tradition in the future and continues to get passed on. Well said
- we should be sharing our knowledge and art with everyone. That's why I love writing and reading blogs so the world can be enriched with more knowledge and perspectives.

Love,

Chasing the sun

One thing I noticed while being around Arizona is that there is CACTUS everywhere. It's not just your average cactus, there are so many different kind of cactus plants such as napolea which are the red shorter ones below. We are also getting used to the hot climate and was even brave enough to venture out and shop at an outdoor mall :p Trust me it's a huge feat.

Here's the outfit I was sporting on day 2. We were going out for dinner, so I wanted to dress up a bit but still maintain my "cool". I got these shorts in a sale in Seattle and they are the most comfortable things ever. They also have drawstrings on the side so you can adjusted it to make them shorter or longer. It's a nice cross between the fancy pattern and casual feel of the fabric.

Outfit #2

I'm absolutely enjoying the sun.. Even getting a bit bronzy ;) It was nice being relaxed but I have to say that sometimes it's not easy to get yourself to slow down. Going from go go go to completely nothing can be an uncomfortable process, but we owe it to ourselves to just stop and let it go, even for a brief moment throughout the day. I saw a new meme that said "KEEP CALM its only the Olympics". Maybe there needs to be a shirt that says "KEEP CALM, it's just life."

A hot, hot mess

As soon as I got off the plane in my scarf and jacket, I felt like the crazy person. It is 40 degrees here - yes, just like Bikram Yoga. Look at that, free exercise! Can't complain about the sunshine.

Thankfully, we arrived at a beautiful resort where we water stations, pools and air conditioning are never lacking in sight.

In this weather, shorts are the ultimate go-to. I paired up my favorite purple shorts with a slightly sheer turquoise top for extra breathability. Talk about function over fashion!

Away We Go

As I am writing this, I am melting away in a resort in Phoenix. I have reunited with my partner in crime (my travel buddy). We have started off our 12-day adventure in Phoenix, then will be making our way to LA and up the California coast to San Francisco. I will try to update as much as possible - whenever wifi allows me to!

It's tricky trying to pack for places where the weather can be completely opposites, from scorching hot 40s to cool 20, especially when you are trying to cram everything into one small baggage. But the job was done and I was happy with it.

(btw: my packing tutorial can be found here. http://wlovingkindness.tumblr.com/post/6169430356/ccs-guide-to-packing-june-2011)

What I packed:
- 2 pairs of shorts
- a skirt
- a pair of leggings
- a pair of jeans
- 4 tops
- a sweater + a jacket
- 2 pairs of shoes + flip flops
- scarf + a belt
PLUS:
- a fancy shmancy dress + dress shoes

With the exception of a Gala I will be attending, I will be remixing these pieces to create a different outfit everyday. Let's get this party started!

P.S. Please let me know if you have suggestions on where we should hit up!

Little Miss Sunshine

Hello Friends!

I thought I would start off the new blog with a simple yet fun outfit. I am loving the bright hues this season (no puns intended) and just cannot do without this neon yellow tank top. Needless to say, the yellow and blue combo is an awesome contrast and makes the outfit ultra fun and summer-friendly.I also tucked part of the tank into the waist band, in order to create the illusion of height with the long skirt. Hopefully I'll get a chance to restyle this skirt over the course of the summer to get more wears out of it. If our clothes were humans, they would and should be our BFFs and not just a one-time acquaintance!
